Heads of State from ECOWAS Back Ghana’s AU Petition Against South Africa
President John Mahama has announced that leaders from several West African countries have united in their support for Ghana’s initiative to raise concerns with the African Union regarding recent incidents involving anti-migration attacks in South Africa. The coalition includes heads of state from Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, and Togo. These leaders, along with other member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have expressed their unified stance in supporting Ghana’s diplomatic efforts.
This collective backing was conveyed in response to the recent surge of anti-migration attacks targeting West African nationals residing in South Africa. Ghana has submitted a formal petition to the African Union, seeking urgent intervention and dialogue to address these issues, which have not only affected the safety and wellbeing of migrants but have also threatened the spirit of Pan-African solidarity and cooperation.
President Mahama emphasized that this united front underscores the importance of regional cooperation and shared responsibility among African nations to protect their citizens and promote mutual respect and understanding across the continent. The support from ECOWAS leaders demonstrates a strong commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of all African migrants, fostering a sense of solidarity in the face of these challenges.
The backing from these West African nations is a significant step towards ensuring that the concerns of Ghana and other affected countries are taken seriously at the continental level. It highlights the collective resolve within ECOWAS to uphold the dignity of African migrants and to seek constructive solutions through diplomatic channels. Together with my Municipal Education Director for Ayawaso West, I had the privilege of organizing and overseeing the donation of a substantial quantity of free school uniforms to pupils in selected schools within my beloved constituency. This initiative was motivated by our shared commitment to supporting education and ensuring that every child has access to the necessary resources to succeed in their academic pursuits.
The distribution of the uniforms was carried out with great enthusiasm and care, aiming to reach as many students as possible, especially those from vulnerable and underprivileged backgrounds. By providing these uniforms, we hope to foster a sense of pride, belonging, and confidence among the pupils, encouraging them to attend school regularly and perform to the best of their abilities.
This effort is part of our broader commitment to improving educational conditions in our community, recognizing that uniform provision is a vital component of creating an enabling environment for learning. We believe that every child deserves an equal opportunity to excel regardless of their socio-economic status. The response from the pupils, parents, and school authorities was indeed heartwarming, reaffirming our collective dedication to nurturing the future leaders of our constituency.
Moving forward, we remain dedicated to supporting education through various initiatives, knowing that investing in our children’s education is investing in the future development and prosperity of Ayawaso West. We are grateful for the collaboration with all stakeholders involved and look forward to continuing these efforts to uplift our community and ensure that no child is left behind.
